Opening Scripture:

The very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (John 6:63b).

There are two components to the word of God; spirit and life. Every tree has a root, which cannot be seen. We can see a dead plant, with withered leaves but this is as a result of the root being dead. The source cannot be alive and the resource dead. Therefore, to give life back to something one most start from adequately supplying the source of life to it. That is why you do not water the leaves but the root.

This is a characteristic of God’s word (John 6:63), what about our words? Our words come from thoughts, our thoughts are the sum total of the knowledge and understanding we have come to accumulate over time. That is, what is being built up in your spirit man is a sum total of what you have seen, heard, smelt, felt and tasted throughout your experience on earth. This becomes, what you know. Your senses, therefore are the gateways to your soul and ultimately to your Spirit. In Proverbs 18:21, Solomon said, “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” That is our words have the ability to either kill and to give life. It is quite clear why it kills, because, for all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and in our entire stay here on earth we have definitely not accumulated only good things (Things that are pleasing to god) via our various gateways. It can give life because we are made in God’s image, (Genesis 1:26). Remember, from the opening scripture, the word of God has the ability to only give life (i.e. it does not kill) but it does not stop there, Jesus gives us another characteristic of the word and that is, they are spirit.

Every Word of God has the backing of the Father and the acting of the Holy Spirit, God said, “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” (Numbers 23:19). Every word of Jesus had the backing of the Father and the acting of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the words of the Son comes from the Father, which is the source of the word and everything in the world as well and they cannot be separated (John 1:1). We have been able to conclude that every word of man, has a source, that is from your spirit and that it has the potential to kill or to give life. The killing word has it sources from the devil (John 10:10) and the living word has its source from the word of God (John 6:63). Words are stored in the well of the spirit, speaking is just an act of drawing out from the reservoir of stored words in your spirit man.

You have the power (will power) to choose what you take in via your senses and what you decide not to take in. The same way with the word of God, you have the power to choose what to accept and what not to accept. For example, the first time you hear something, maybe you might not like it but when you hear it again, you might or might not remember. However, whether you do remember or not, the key fact is that you have been fed with the information which is knowledge. From knowledge, you move on to the realms of seeking to understand. At this stage, you must have accepted what you have heard and decided to listen again and again and meditate on what you heard, with the aim of wanting to understand it better. When you finally get it, then if you are like me, you scream and shout, oh yeah! I got it. It might not be something you heard from a friend.  It might be a song, say a friend of yours ask you to listen to a song, you listen to it the first time and you do not really get it, you might either accept to give it a trial or maybe you feel it is really trashy and don’t give it a second thought. Again, you might remember that song later or you might never at all. If coincidently, it comes up on the radio, I believe, if you remember it then you know the song, you might not understand all the lyrics but you know the song. The more you listen the more you start to understand the lyrics.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing of the word of God (Romans 10:17), The more you read, meditate, read and meditate in that cycle the more the word of God becomes clearer and clearer. The bridge between knowledge and understanding is faith and faith is grown out of belief (Matthew 17:20). That is why after Jesus had spoken in John 6:63, the next verse goes on to say, Jesus said, “Some of you do not believe in me”. In verse 19 of Romans 10, Paul asked, “but did the people of Israel really understand?” To get understanding, of the word of God, we must first know, accept/believe/have faith, meditate (Joshua 1:8), remove unwanted obstacles in your source and then seek to understand. James 1:22 says, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what is says. Otherwise, you are fooling yourself’. Remember, once you understand seek to practice, for it is the doer that is justified and not the hearer (Romans 2:13). After, understanding you must seek to do what is in the word of God (Obedience). Romans 10, ends by saying, ” All day long I opened my arms to them, but they were disobedient and rebellious.” Abraham is the Father of Faith today, why? Because he heard,  believed/had faith, understood and obeyed.

If you look at the creation story, everything came from something and they still live on their sources. The plants that came from the ground are truly dependent on the soil, the animals that came from water are still living in water and the ones that came from land are reliant on grass for food or the animal that had fed on grass. The land is reliant on the water because they were once together. We are primarily or secondarily reliant on the soil (plants) for food because we came from the soil but don’t forget it was the breadth of life from the Father that made man a living soul, so we are to be reliant on the word of God to live as well. To feed on God’s word you have to link your source (your spirit man) to God’s Spirit.

It is a new year and there will be more of the word of God coming your way. There will be more opportunities to accumulate life and fill the hard drive of your spirit man with life, thereby, deleting death. However, we must be willing to believe in the word of God, by acknowledging the source and willing to practice after we have understood our role. You might have a spirit man, which could have accumulated a lot of dirt in your experiences in life but God can help you wash it all away, the word of God will cut off every unwanted entity and make you whole again (Hebrews 4:12) just be available to hear. Shalom!
