Eccl 3:3-6

3. This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion! For the living know that they will die,   but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten.6 Their love, their hate  and their jealousy have long since vanished;never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun. (NLT)

One thing common to all men is death, it almost seems like man lives to die. In some sense, we are born into this world and after a few years, we die. That is looking at things from the surface level (the body). From the inner man without Christ life is dead. With Christ, the cycle is more like death, life, and infinite life.  Verse 9 of the opening scripture says; “Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun.”  It is no surprise Solomon said life was meaningless; it is for the simple reason that he didn’t have Christ and hence the conclusion that the best thing in “life” was to love your wife as that is your lot (Purpose). It is also not surprising that even in that time he had the understanding, love is still the greatest purpose howbeit love for one’s wife. I must point out that this is before Christ; man’s greatest purpose now is to Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need (Matthew 6:33) and remember that Christ has given life a meaning.

As was previously mentioned, all men die even when Jesus lived He was subjected to the law of death. Though he never followed the cycle of death and then life in Christ because he was Christ and he brought life. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind (John 1:4). We know that Jesus still lives on, as his words have shaped us in having a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). All of this because we have access to His word.  He left a legacy for all of us to follow (Romans 8:17) so that even in a dead world we can live “life” by following the legacy of our father.

The last post talked about experiences shaping what we know and in turn shaping who we are. Life has put a father in charge of his children so that he might be able to teach them what he has learnt from his experiences; to hinder them from making the same mistakes that he made. Legacy as we know it is defined according to the web dictionary as, an amount of money or property left to someone in a will. It consists of just properties and money but it almost seems to me like a father saying to his son, I couldn’t give you my time and you probably couldn’t learn a lot from me but I made a lot of money with my time so you can have it, make a lot of money from this too. Now we wonder why the world is not a better place and why it says time is money. A good legacy can contain money and properties, but the must important thing is the morals (a lesson that can be derived from a story or experience, standards of behaviour; principles of right and wrong) learnt even before the father passes away. A good legacy starts from the moment you think of having a child, one must think about what morales you aim to impact in him/her (Proverb 22:6).

A man’s legacy extends far beyond properties and wealth but Usually, a legacy is a formalized legal document stating how the property of a deceased should be shared. However, I believe that the strongest legacy you can give your children is morals, and a dead man cannot do that. Lessons learnt from life, terrible situations you have been in that you do not want to ever repeat and a route out of terrible situations which you now understand the root cause.

Just like you have the family tree, though many branches and leaves make up the tree, a strong legacy keeps the branches together and creates the right weather to keep few leaves from falling. It is in the legacy of Christ (The New Testament) that we stand strong together under the same family tree regardless of colour and ethnicity, calling ourselves brothers and sisters. In this way, the life of Christ is born again in the hearts of the sister you called sister at church or brother you called brother at church because we know we are from the same family. The life of Christ is born again in the hearts of the needy, poor and hungry when we give arms to the poor, cloth the naked and feed the hungry (Matthew 25:31-46), this is and a lot more is the will of Christ.

A man once said, after just surviving from a disaster which took the lives of over 60 people. He said, “I have come to realize how short life is,” within a few minutes it can be gone. We all can take a cue from the life of Jesus and come to realise that the only way of living a long life is by leaving and living a good legacy, remembering that life itself starts from Christ as without Christ there is no good.

How Did Jesus leave a Good Legacy?

  1. He kept his disciples close: Jesus didn’t have any lessons to be learnt from life because He himself was life. However, He wanted to impact the life of His children with the “good life” or “Godly life” so He had to keep them close to Him at all times. He told them parables sometimes explaining the meaning to them and other time He didn’t. They learnt so many lessons that after He died they had to write about Him. Though via the Holy Spirit, but it was the will power in them that made them do so.
  1. Doing the will of the father: I remember there was the story of when Jesus healed a lame man on the Sabbath. Though the Jewish leaders harassed him, He said “My Father is always working and so am I.” by so doing when we act as Christians we sometimes ask ourselves, what will Jesus do because we know by so doing we are doing the will of the father. Doing the will of Christ will in somewhere impact our children and then in tight situations, they could ask themselves, what will father and mother do at this point? If you have been following the way of Christ then they will tend to follow.

In conclusion, please follow the ways of Christ and teach it to your children. Experience life and learn lessons, understand your failures and strategize a route out of it which you should teach to your children, keep them close to you and closer to God, so that when your life on earth has expired they can continue to live life for you not making the same mistakes you made. Life has undergone many generations after Christ and there have been a lot of mistakes made, which has not been documented and we are unaware of. The world today believes that a legacy is just a pieces of property, I believe that it is way more than that; we should live, write and leave a legacy.

  1. Goodly Legacy is it. As Father Abraham was acknowledged by God as His Servant of goodly legacy in Gen 18;19 ” For I have known ( chosen, acknowledge him as My own), so that he may Teach and Command his children and the sons of his house after him to keep the Way of the Lord and to do what is just and righteous (Generous, Kind & Fair) so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has promised him” Amplified Version. Thus, goodly legacy is a godly legacy. It is inclusive of money and properties but far much more than that as it is amazingly rich in moral contents and is transgenerational. We are expected, as our godly and moral duty, to do same to our children and others around us in the in the footsteps of Father Abraham.
    Shalom!
